DIY Chunky Knit Sweater - Review of the Nanaimo Cardigan

DIY Chunky Knit Sweater - Review of the Nanaimo Cardigan

Hello friends! Today, I'm bringing you a knitting project! My knitting projects are usually very slow going, knit here and there over many, many months. But this cardigan was super quick! I started it in the middle of March and finished it last weekend. Knitting with bulky yarn really speeds up a project! I usually knit socks with a fine gauge yarn so it was fun to do something so quick and big.

The pattern for this sweater is the Nanaimo Cardigan by Good Night Day. They are a Canadian based knitwear designer and even sell hand knit garments if you don't knit yourself. The sweater is knit from the top down, starting with the large rib knit collar. The shoulders are a raglan style and the body is cropped. My favorite feature are the balloon shaped sleeves. The sleeves are knit straight down from the shoulder and then just before the rib knit cuff, you do a row of decreases to create the puffy look at the wrist.

12 Gorgeous Summer Knitting Patterns

Summer knitting calls for lightweight yarns, small projects and lace when at all possible. When knitting in the summer heat, the last thing you want is a big pile of wool sitting on your lap. It's also prime travel season and the knitting project I love to travel with is socks. They are fun to knit and won't take up a lot room in your carry-on.

Since moving to California, I've nearly stopped knitting. I make a pair or two of socks a year, sometimes a hat or an occasional baby sweater. Whereas when I lived in Oregon, I knit countless hats, mittens and a fair number of big bulky sweaters. Here in southern climes though, I have little need for sweaters, especially bulky ones. So my knitting has dwindled and sewing has stepped in to fill my making hours. For a few years now, I've been thinking that I was just knitting the wrong things and should try a summer knit. So to inspire myself (and you!) I put together this little roundup of summer knitting patterns.

Vintage Knitting Basket

Vintage Knitting Basket

Years ago my parents brought home this vintage folding basket for me. The design is rather ingenious, just a wood frame that is held together with a fabric box. When I first got the basket, I removed the fabric and made a new bag. Over the years I grew to dislike the fabric I had used and nearly gave it away. Instead I decided to replace the fabric again and my love affair with this little basket is renewed.
