DIY Roundup – 10 Summer Shorts Sewing Patterns

When summer rolls around, I pretty much live in shorts. I love the casual, ready for anything look that they impart. I wear shorts all day and for sleeping too. So of course I’ve sewed a lot of pairs of shorts. I know shorts are not for everyone but I was a little surprised that there are not more shorts sewing patterns available. But I was also pleased to find a number of patterns with really cool design details. In today’s post, I’ve rounded up 10 of my favorite shorts sewing patterns to inspire your summer sewing. I’ve sewn a handful of these and the rest are ones I simply love the design of. Read on for all the details and links.

10 Shorts Patterns for Summer

1. BurdaStyle Pleated Shorts 02/2017 #104B
I love the large pleats and cuffed hem of these shorts. Plus, they look super comfy to wear.

2. Flint Shorts by Megan Nielsen
These shorts have a really cool crossover closure and super cute tie closure option. I made a wearable muslin of these a few weeks ago and basically didn't take them off for the next two days. I'm looking forward to making them again in the cropped pants length.

3. KwikSew K4178
These look super easy to make with a simple elasticized waistband but the wrap front adds major cool.

4. Simplicity 1165
These are a great basic pull on pair of shorts, the kind everyone needs one or three of in their wardrobe.

5. Emerson Shorts by True Bias
This is another pattern that I've made a wearable muslin for and am looking forward to making again in the future. I really like the relaxed fit of the leg and the flat front waistband and elastic in the back. Pure comfort!

6. Astrid Wrap Shorts by Named Clothing
I'm a big fan of the Named Alexandria Shorts (see mine here) and have mentioned them a bunch of times so I today I decided to feature the Astrid Wrap Shorts. They have a really unique wrap front that ties at the side waist.

7. Maritime Shorts by Grainline Studio
Classic fly front shorts perfect for those seeking a mid-rise.

8. Weston Shorts by Seamwork
And for those who prefer a high waist, these are the shorts for you. Essential for any wardrobe.

9. Chi-Town Chinos by Alina Design Co.
I've been wanting to make the pants version of these for a while so I was pleased to find this shorts version (plus it comes with a skirt option!).

10. McCall’s M6930
This pattern has a bunch of options including a scallop hem with heart shaped back pockets.
